Birth Defects: Cyclopia, Conjoined Twins and Neu-Laxova Syndrome
Birth defects encompass several different congenital conditions, including cyclopia, conjoined twins and Neu-Laxova syndrome. Cyclopia is the most severe form of holoprosencephaly, in which the brain fails to divide. It involves one central eye and may include a tubular nose, called a proboscis, above it. Most severe cases of holoprosencephaly result in death before or soon after birth. Conjoined twins occur in about 1.47 per 100,000 births. Neu-Laxova syndrome is a rare, lethal condition inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Its features include severe growth restriction, craniofacial abnormalities, swelling, joint contractures and ichthyosis. Associated genes are involved in serine biosynthesis. |
