I'm going to go with 'impaled by stone'. The straightness of his foot, shin and wound look too clean for a compound fracture. Regardless of what it may be, it does look mighty painfull! |

The yellowish color of it. You can also clearly see that the wound goes a long way back. Without it bleeding profusely. If he was impaled by a rock, sticking out of the snow, looking like a hammer, or a capital T, there would be more blood. The top opfthe T being closest to the camera. |
