64-year-old Polish Guy Stabbed in the Back at Soup Kitchen
The National Police have arrested the man who allegedly stabbed another person Sunday near a soup kitchen in Ciudad Alta, Gran Canaria. The victim, who sought refuge in the establishment to seek help, required surgery as a result of the knife wound to his back. After the attack, which took place around 10:00 a.m. at number 2 Obispo Servera Street, in the Schamann neighborhood, the assailant fled the scene. Two hours later the 44-year-old man showed up at the Canary Islands Police Headquarters to surrender and admitted to officers that he was the perpetrator of the stabbing. The National Police are now investigating the cause of the incident. The most likely hypothesis is that the victim and the attacker knew each other from the soup kitchen, where both were reportedly users, and that an argument broke out between them on Sunday near the NGO as they were collecting food. At one point during the argument, the now-arrested man took a knife from his belongings and stabbed the other man, a 64-year-old Polish national, in the back. He immediately ran away. The victim called for help at a nearby establishment, where he was lying on the floor. From there, they alerted the emergency services. Local police officers were the first to arrive and assist the victim; the National Police, which took charge of the investigation and took statements from witnesses; and paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC). Medical personnel treated the injured man and, after stabilizing him, rushed him to the Doctor Negrín University Hospital in Gran Canaria, where he underwent surgery due to the incised wound on his back. The alleged perpetrator remains in police custody awaiting judicial review. |
