Zetas Cell Leader El Memin Shot Dead by Police in Cancun, January 2011
Bernardo Gonzalez Castillo, 24, alias El Memin, headed a Zetas special-forces cell that operated the organization's hit squad in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. On the morning of January 18, 2011, he took a taxi from a house in the Paraiso Maya development, intending to get to the bus terminal and flee the city as the army and prosecutors closed in following an earlier shootout. Judicial police and soldiers trapped the taxi, and he was killed by gunfire after opening fire from the vehicle. The state attorney general publicly confirmed his identity, describing him as one of the region's most bloodthirsty hitmen.
