Zetas Cell Leader El Memin Shot Dead by Police in Cancun, January 2011
Bernardo Gonzalez Castillo, 24, known as El Memin, led a cell of the Zetas' special forces running the group's hit squad in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. On the morning of January 18, 2011, knowing the army and prosecutors were closing in after an earlier shootout, he left a house in the Paraiso Maya development by taxi to reach the bus terminal and leave the city. Judicial police and soldiers cornered the taxi; he opened fire and was shot dead on the vehicle. The state attorney general confirmed his identity publicly and called him one of the area's most bloodthirsty hitmen; his cell was blamed for more than twenty executions in the preceding months, with later reporting attributing over a hundred killings to him.  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  · |
