Bigsnail's Mildly Interesting Fact of the Day: Lake Itaipu is the reservoir of Itaipu Dam, which is the highest-output power plant in the world, and one of the most impressive large-scale engineering feats in human history. It powers the entire country of Paraguay as well as SP and Rio. Put in other terms, it could meet the electricty needs of NYC, London, Paris, Madrid, and Milan sinultaneously.

Re: Young Soldier Dies in Fishing Mishap
I am a scuba diver, and we had a report about a school teacher in California who was diving in a kelp bed, and got tangled in monofilament fishing line. She dropped her knife, and couldn't get free. She died about 5 ft. under the surface. Monofilament line is completely invisible under water. you can feel that something is holding you, but unless you can feel for it, there is no way to find out where it is. it is just like an invisible force that you can't overcome. If you are tangled in it, you CANNOT generate enough force to break it. Not even 15 lb. test line. Something like that probably happened to him. But he didn't have 15 minutes of air to try and get free. He had one breath, and when it was used up, he was gone. I bet his death took less than 60 seconds. (I always kept my knife on a line, so I couldn't lose it, even if I dropped it.)

Re: Young Soldier Dies in Fishing Mishap
It amazes me how many people don't even carry a cutting tool. I have an Eezycut Trilobite line cutter permanently attached to my wrist when I am in the water; they're $25 and extremely effective. And a backup knife accessible to my right hand, should my left be immobilized. It's just common sense. That said, it wasn't dropping a knife that cost that teacher her life. It was diving in a high-traffic area where conditions can shift dynamically without a dive buddy. Maybe she panicked and dropped her regulator, because she knew there was no one there to help her. Maybe she panicked at the thought of dying in a creepy kelp bed, and didn't even try to unclip and and slide out, and drowned in the throes of existential horror. Maybe one of those bitch-ass harbor seals had her by the foot. Regardless, having another person there would've almost certainly changed her outcome. This poor kid, though, he just got fucked by happenstance, I guess. Like those videos where a person is walking down the street and suddenly a 50-pound boulder or whatecer lands on their head. |
