He was a pretty small time salesman at a used truck lot, she was a cosmetologist who specialized in fake lashes for women. Neither of them were living in straw huts, but Guatemala's a fairly impoverished country in general and neither of those professions pays well.

No one under the age of 30 even knows how to use email these days, though even if they did it is my understanding that neither of their phones were found. They certainly weren't at the scene, nor were their IDs, as it took them most of the first day (and only after the photos were published) to identify the bodies.

It was never outright stated if they were robbed or if, for some reason, all of their phones and IDs were left at their homes before they came to the location where they died. The implication I got was that they were never recovered.

I know that no belongings and no weapons were stated to be found at the scene, only a half-drunk pack of beer. In the woman's case, at least, it is pretty apparent that she's wearing skin-tight jeans with no obvious outline of a phone or wallet, etc in her pockets. She's also pretty obviously not wearing a bra (photo 6), so there isn't anything tucked in there either, which would be common.


It has been mentioned by a few observers that there are some dirt and leaves in the woman's hair and that her tshirt has a good deal of dust/dirt on it, which could easily be taken to mean that there was some struggle that involved her being knocked to the ground, perhaps while trying to flee. Or perhaps while she was being held in place and noosed.

Both decedents were from other towns and no vehicle was found at the scene. So they either walked many miles (with her in sandals) just to kill themselves/each other, they were brought to this site in a vehicle by the killers (the prevailing theory), or they were killed opportunistically on this spot and the killers took all of their belongings and their vehicle.
