Woman from Belarus Died After an Encounter with a Bear
March 15, 2024, SLOVAKIA: A 31-year-old woman from Belarus died after an encounter with a bear in the Low Tatras. She was hiking with a 29-year-old man and they came face to face with a bear in the early evening. Both of them ran away at that moment, but each in a different direction. The woman had the misfortune that the beast decided to chase her. The men then disappeared from sight and hearing. The service dog of the mountain service marked the place under the rocky threshold where the woman was found without signs of life. At that time, moreover, the bear was still lingering at the scene of the tragedy. He was chased away thanks to the dog, the scream and the subsequent warning shot. Meanwhile, the second group of rescuers found her partner under the rocks, where he was stuck. He was scared but unhurt. Although the investigation has not yet concluded, the medical examiner who examined the body determined the preliminary cause of death to be a devastating head injury. Having lived in Alaska for 5 years I had close encounters with bear. NEVER run. Stand your ground. Apparently they happened upon the bear surprising it. I always kept my car keys dangling half out of my pocket so as to make noise so if any bear were around it would hear me and move away. Sorry for the woman's lost of life :(

Running from a bear is like running from a dog. Just provokes their prey chase drive. Pretend you're dead if grizzly. Intimidate if black bear. |
