Essentially a Prefrontal Lobotomy. He likely lived barring any infections- but he will no longer have any "personality"
He will live rest of his life with a flat affect, nothing happy, nothing sad.

Prefrontal Lobotomy was an actual procedure and was essentially how we "Treated" the most psychotic in our society back in the 40's and 50's before drug intervention. Basically wipe out the frontal lobes of a human brain and they're emotionally numb forever. The procedure was performed using a metal rod inserted beside/behind the subjects eyeball.
