Re: US Prison Riot
For all the instances of it in popular media over years -- songs by John Lennon, Paul Simon, etc., and movies with Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, etc. -- it's amazing that some of you folks don't know what you're talking about. Unfortunately you're too busy being bigotted. These images are from the September 1971 assault on the Attica Correctional Facility in Attica, N.Y., by New York State Police after prisoners had rioted over racism -- including unsanitary prison conditions (e.g., being permitted one roll of toilet paper per person per month and only one shower per week). Built in the 1930's, this "correctional facility" was designed for 1,200 inmates but in 1971 it was jammed with 2,225. All of its 383 correctional officers were white, the majority openly racist and acting extra-legally (that means "illegal" to the uninitated), and routinely assaulted the inmates at will. About 1,000 snapped under the pressure and they rioted, took over the prison, seezing 33 hostages. They negotiated with the state for basic human rights to be followed at the prison, and the state immediately agreed that 28 of the complaints were legitimate and vowed they would e addressed. The one demand the inmates made -- that of amnesty for the riot necessary in their view to bring the problems and abuse to the public eye -- this was rejected by the state, and negotiation ceased. The police assault killed 29 inmates, several of whom were either not resisting or not involved at all with the rioters (they were just black), along with 10 correctional officers -- all of whom except for one were killed by gunfire by the state police or retired prison guards. One wouldn't know it by the some of comments on this thread, but the assault was highly criticized at the time by the Governor's own commission which investigated it. In fact, the State of New York paid $12 million to the families of the murdered. To this day, the prison is still overcrowded. Is this funny to anyone? |

Re: US Prison Riot
That's fair, but what of those there that are actually innocent (yeah, there are many of them there)...do they deserve that, too? This is where, with all due-respect, I disagree with you.
