Unusual Suicide with a Chainsaw
Serbia. A 39-year-old male was found dead at the meadow in the morning on October 2011 around 09:30 am, with his throat cut and a chainsaw beside him. He was last seen alive with a chainsaw half an hour before he was found dead. When the body was found, the chainsaw was operating with a trigger mechanism locked. Blood spattering was found on the chainsaw. He was lying on the ground face down on his right side. Very little blood was present at the scene, there was a pool of blood directly under the victim’s head and neck. The blood splattering was found on his left hand and the front of his chest was soaking in blood. His sweatshirt with collar was torn in the left shoulder and left side of the neck region. Fig.1 Situation at the site and position of the body. Fig.2 Torn of sweatshirt with collar. He had a history of multiple suicidal attempts. He had been a psychiatric patient for a few years but was never hospitalized. There was no data about his psychiatric therapy. He was a professional lumberjack. All physical injuries were confined to the head, neck, and left shoulder. Two major (long and wide) wounds were found and documented on the neck and head. A wound on the posterior and right lateral side of his neck and head was noted. This cut was located across the right ear. The medical examiner noted an irregular rupture on the posterior-right side of the atlantooccipital joint with impaired bone. The medical examiner also noted an opening in the spinal canal with discrete hemorrhage in leptomeninges at the same level without any damage on the spinal cord. In addition, the mastoid process of the right temporal bone and the right branch of the jawbone was almost completely destroyed. Another wound on the right lateral side of the neck was noted and parallel to the previously described wound. Fig.3 A wound on the posterior and right lateral side of neck and head. Fig.4 A wound on the left lateral side of neck. The medical examiner noted that muscles of the left side of the neck, left common carotid artery, left internal jugular vein, and left vagus nerve were completely cut off. The spinal cord was completely cut off at the C5 and C6 vertebra. Autopsy also revealed that the upper left lobe of the thyroid gland, left lateral wall of the trachea, the lower part of the thyroid cartilage and esophagus were severely torn. Another wound on the left lateral side of the neck was noted, parallel to the previously described wound, with a small detached flap of skin. Fig.5 A multiple linear and striped parallel abrasions on the outer side of the left shoulder. In both described wounds, bone injuries were compatible with the use of a large wide cutting edge instrument like a chainsaw. Also, there were multiple linear and striped parallel abrasions on the outer side of the left shoulder and one abrasion on the left lateral side of the neck. Microscopic examination confirmed the autopsy findings. The partial presence of blood inhalation was noted. Toxicology was negative. - This post is for educational purposes only and is nonprofit. Re: Unusual Suicide with a Chainsaw
Well, if he was a lumberjack, then he's OK!

Re: Unusual Suicide with a Chainsaw
Unusual, but it definitely shows the degree with which this guy wanted to off himself. He just left the decision to the weight and momentum of the machine. No "Ouch, that hurts!" recoil when leaning in to the chain bar.
