Damn. I just saw this photo (the one with her limbs cut open vertically).

What the hell? Can someone please explain this. Why would they cut her open like that? Is that a routine thing that is done in extreme burn cases like this? Is it to prevent the skin from bursting due to internal fluid buildup or something? Why not just have small incisions with drain tubes or some other less destructive means? That just seems so extreme. I can't imagine she had any hope of surviving that nightmare.

Might've been to relieve swelling. According to the professionals I know, severe burn victims commonly suffer from swelling that can impact circulation. If her tissues were swelling to the point that they were cutting off the flow of her femoral arteries, then they had to make those incisions to save her legs.
That's what my grey's anatomy expertise was telling me... :p
