Re: Swimming Hole

Scratch that, I got confused. The head stone we are using has a base. :)

Re: Swimming Hole

Well, either is good. The kind that has the granite base underneath should be set back about 5-6 inches to insure it doesn't topple forward into the grave. If you ever visit cemeteries and see the headstone leaning into the grave, that's usually what's going on.

That or whoever dug the grave dug too far under the foundation, and it's no longer stable. With the one that are partially set into the soil, depending on their size, can be easier to deal with.

One that's 3 feet tall needs to be buried up to 9 inches, maybe more. On a hill, the one that's partially buried seems to work best, on even ground I'd go with the granite base. Hope that helps some.

Re: Swimming Hole

Hey Bill, Do you hand dig the graves or use a backhoe? Just curious.

Re: Swimming Hole

Both. I try to use the backhoe whenever feaseable though. Some places like steep mountains, I might have to hand dig, but the backhoe's the way to go.

Re: Swimming Hole

I'm a boackhoe operator myself, I dig trenches mainly but I've always thought some would make great graves, especially for some tards I work with.

Re: Swimming Hole

You could dig a grave if you dig trenches, and the yards would make the deal sweeter because you could toss them in for practice.
