This happened in Orem, Utah. The man, who I will not identify, was a struggling heroin addict who committed suicide in the parking lot of a church where a recovery program was to be held that same day. He was a Mormon and was 51 years old at the time of his death.

Possibly used bird shot. Wouldn't take the head apart as would a slug or 00 or 000 buck. But it still would pass into the skull and brain at that point blank in the mouth distance. Mouth is probably shredded to pieces.

That was the comment I was looking for. I wondered too why he looked so "good" I mean shotgun suicides always end up blowing their head of but this looks pretty clean, reminds me of one of the Columbine shooters who killed himself with a shotgun and his head was intact too maybe they both used birdshot and as you mentioned a smaller load

I've seen these results from a light load made especially so there isn't much head trauma. He or she who wants to die but doesn't want to destroy their looks. Basically the person wanting to do himself in simply removes most if not all of the shot (bb's) from the shell. Then you simply have the gasses and blast that blows blood out of your ears and nose but doesn't destroy the skull. There is no gore on the rear window but some splatter to the left of his head near the seat belt anchor which shows that there was no exit wound from the skull...no blood down the rear of his neck either.

It was a full power load as far as gunpowder goes (note the shell ejected from the shotgun and the bolt is open showing that only one shell was loaded).

I have seen two suicides done in this manner.
