Re: Stiffy
Rigor mortis can be quite strong in holding the position of the body when rigor first sets in, then as the body develops full rigor, the body can become "stiff" throughout. But, rigor mortis comes and goes, following the same path as it had set in, to begin with. The very small muscles of the face and head, then working its way down the body, until it it in full rigor. This can take between 6-8 hours and be fully set within about 12 hours or so. But it will go away and never return to a body once it has run its course. The main cause for the body to become firm again after rigor, is the embalming fluid, that will cause the entire body to become firm or "stiff" but this type of firmness or stiffness will not go away. It is also an urban myth about "breaking bones" due to rigor mortis. The limbs and joints do take some effort to "break down" the rigor, but this is done through manipulating the limb or flexing the joints in order to get the joint to be flexible. The expression "stiff as a board" would be a good expression to use on a body in full rigor, but then after the rigor has left, it would then be "limp as a noodle" but just until the embalming fluid does its job when prepping the body. Then the body actually becomes more like a coffee table or chair, being they will be at room temp just as any other item in the room. |
