Our eldest brother still bore burn scars on his arms and biceps from a china made battery for nokia back in the monochrome lcd phone days. twas already li-ion battery technology by then. They woke up with a loud hissing above their heads and saw his phone's back swelling like a turtle's back. When he tried to open the back cover, it went boom, burning him and their bed sheets and mattress. He said it did not last more than 5 seconds but the chemical burned through the mattress about 4 inches deep in multiple spots. like dropping a molten metal drop on a margarine block.

Phone was genuine finland nokia, charger was new and genuine, and supply in our area never goes more than 210 volts to supply the 220 volts requirements of everything electrical here. only the battery was china but brand new. supposed to be charged overnight for first time charging.

Those lithium cells can create intense chemical burs (as others here have stated), but I agree with Kseigmund; it was more likely a massive surge of electricity which cooked the battery into her chest, but the amount of current killed her instantly. We'd have an answer of lightning by looking on her back for an exit pathway of the lightening.
