Did they think he was still alive? He’s got that trachea tube. Why did they stitch his face back together? He’s gotta have had a pulse or something when they found him.
There are several cases here like that. alive but mangled face. face was probably tilted up too much with brain away from the blast path.

But the way they closed him up is weird. no plan of rebuilding at all. just sew it close and they are done.

Never shoot yourself in the head from beneath the chin. The gun can jerk forward and suddenly you're still alive but without a face.
