He heard something rustlin outside in the dark of the night, he grabbed his rifle and a flashlight to investigate a possible theft activity but he was slow to dodge the attack. i vote that this is what happened there. knife severed that big blood vessel in the neck. must have died from bleedin

He had the flashlight/torch just in case he went to hell, he's afraid of the dark  . The wound is from the gun, the angle that his body was when he shot is what caused it. There are teeth broken and missing that you can see.

Yup, the teeth look mangled from a round. If he had the barrel inside the mouth there may not be much stippling. In any case, he accomplished what he intended, albeit it not as clean as he could have. I'm guessing from the lack of movement, he must have severed the brain stem or something. Quick passing?
