At about 7am on June 17, 2010, Sergio Mazza, a 38 year old German national who worked as a food and beverage executive at the Makati Shangri-La hotel, was walking from his apartment to work when a lone gunman shot him three times in the head at close range. The killing occurred at the corner of Dela Rosa and Perea Streets in Legaspi Village, Makati City, Philippines. Although early reports identified him as Italian, police later corrected his nationality.

Police ruled out robbery because his wallet, phone and watch were left untouched, and investigated a personal motive, questioning several women he had been seeing. A task force gathered a dozen statements and issued composite sketches. His family increased the reward to 2 million pesos in 2011, but a key informant vanished and no arrest was ever reported.
