A suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device in the international arrivals baggage-claim area at Moscow Domodedovo Airport on January 24, 2011. The landside blast killed 37 people and injured 173, including 86 who were hospitalized. Investigators estimated that the bomb contained the equivalent of 2 to 5 kilograms of TNT and was packed with shrapnel and chopped wire.

Russian officials identified the bomber as Magomed Yevloyev, 20, of Ali-Yurt, Ingushetia. Caucasus Emirate leader Doku Umarov later claimed responsibility in a video and said he had ordered the attack. On November 11, 2013, a Moscow region court convicted four men of helping shelter, finance and transport the bomber. Islam Yandiyev, Ilez Yandiyev and Bashir Khamkhoyev received life sentences. Akhmed Yevloyev, the bomber's brother, received a 10-year sentence because he was 15 at the time of the offense. President Dmitry Medvedev blamed failures in airport security and dismissed several officials.
