As you know big trucks can not stop on a dime. Usually as the driver of any tractor trailer involved in an accident will apply the brakes, thus the object which falls between the tires and the road acts as a chock and is slowly / rapidly sheered off. The result is usually the same if they don't immediately apply the brakes as most rigs are near 80,000 lbs or more.
