Re: Proof of Embalmers' Good Work Decades Later
Yes, you're right, number 1 is her. That was taken in 2003, upon exhumation some 17 years after burial. If she had not been that well preserved, its likely Peterson would had gotten off.

Re: Proof of Embalmers' Good Work Decades Later
I am unsure of who the woman in number 2 is, though. All that I was able to find out was that she was disinterred some 24 years after burial, that she was 29 years old, stabbed to death in her home by unknown assailant. Based on that, it would put the murder right around 1980, give or take a few years I suppose. Any ideas? I searched a bit for a good candidate, found none that fit those general criteria.

Re: Proof of Embalmers' Good Work Decades Later
Number 2 is Susan Cavanary Griffiths, who was stabbed to death in her home in Clinton Township, Michigan in July 1978. She was about 29, divorced, and lived with her two sons, ages 6 and 8 years old. They found her body in her bedroom. This photo was included in a chapter on exhumation by Dr. Michael Baden in a book edited by a former Macomb County medical examiner. He said the climate and location of the cemetery (drainage) contributed to the preservation of the body. Griffiths' family requested and paid for the 2003 exhumation because they recalled that in her casket at the funeral, Griffiths' nails had polish on them, something she did not do in life. They wanted the funeral director to remove it, but were told there was so much debris under the fingernails that could not be cleaned away that the polish was used to conceal it. It took a while to find out who she was, believe me!

Re: Proof of Embalmers' Good Work Decades Later
Emeraldkimmy, thanks for the info, great work! There does not seem to be much online about that case--was anyone ever charged or convicted? I gathered the ex-husband was suspected. |
