Postmortem Changes I

1. The decedent shows persistent rigor mortis with the right arm defying gravity. The body must have been in another position for several hours after death before being placed in a supine position.

2. Livor mortis on the posterior aspects of the body is caused by settling of the blood because of gravity when the body is in a supine position.

3. As the postmortem interval lengthens, Tardieu spots develop in areas of lividity, such as this individual's shoulder area, as decomposing capillaries rupture.

4. Tardieu spots on the abdomen

5. Tache noire develops when the eyelids are not completely shut and postmortem drying occurs.

6.Postmortem purge fluid exudes from the oral and nasal passages; no traumatic injuries were uncovered at autopsy.

7. Decomposition is a process of autolysis and putrefaction

8. Maceration after retention of an intrauterine fetal death

9. Rigor mortis of the erector pilae can result in postmortem "goose flesh."

10. Pressure on unfixed livor results in blanching of the coloration

11. Livor mortis in an anterior position. The area of blanching across the chest and abdomen resulted from the decedent lying on top of his left arm and right hand.

12. The lung is dark purple in the posterior dependent areas as a result of livor mortis. This may simulate congestion.

13. Decomposition has progressed in this individual with breakdown of blood vessels and extravasation of red blood cells into the subcutaneous and adipose tissues of the abdomen, simulating antemortem hemorrhage. There were no associated cutaneous or bony injuries, and the scene was innocuous.

14. Postmortem drying of the tongue and mucosal membranes darkens the tissues, imparting a pseudohemorrhagic appearance

15. Early decompositional changes are manifested by green discoloration over the abdomen.

16. Marbling outlines the vasculature in this decedent as the postmortem interval lengthens.

17. Decomposition advances with green discoloration of the skin, generalized bloating (beginning in the abdomen), and vesicle formation with subsequent skin slippage.

18. Postmortem degloving of the hand.

19.A law enforcement official utilizes the degloved fingers to obtain fingerprints.

20. View of collapsed, decomposing organs in the chest cavity with maggots present and gaseous distention of the intestines.
