Peugeot Splits in Three at Pudahuel Bridge, Santiago: 5 Dead, May 10, 2009
At about 5:20 a.m. on May 10, 2009, a Peugeot 605 with six people aboard went out of control in heavy fog on Ruta 68 near the entrance to the Pudahuel Bridge in Santiago, Chile. It hit the bridge containment barrier and split into three sections. Five people were killed, including three who were ejected into the Mapocho River and later recovered from the water. A 15-year-old girl was critically injured but survived. Investigators identified speeding and alcohol as probable contributing factors. The occupants had been returning from a night out.
