Peugeot Splits in Three at Pudahuel Bridge, Santiago: 5 Dead, May 10, 2009
The crash happened at about 5:20 a.m. on May 10, 2009, when a Peugeot 605 carrying six people lost control in dense fog on Ruta 68 at the entrance to the Pudahuel Bridge in Santiago, Chile. The car struck the bridge's containment barrier and broke into three pieces; five occupants died, three of whom were thrown from the car into the Mapocho River below and had to be recovered from the water. A 15-year-old girl survived with critical injuries. Investigators cited excess speed and alcohol as likely factors; the group was returning from a night out. |
