I think he was bludgeoned in the back of the head with that purple thing while he slept on the sofa. Marks on the back of the hands are imprints from the sofa so he was originally found face down on the sofa and was moved, hence the flow of blood across the face.

P.S. They weren't trying to "hide" the sin at all. Rather the plan was to get Uriah out of the way so that David could openly have Bathsheba.
