Looks to me like he was aiming just a bit too rostral; it's mostly his face that's gone. Frontal lobes might have been taken out, but I'm guessing he "lived" for a few minutes at least with some degree of consciousness. Or maybe the concussion knocked him out and then he bled out. Brains look like they are still pretty much inside the head.

Agreed, he most definitely lived through the initial blast. Since he is still holding the shotgun he most likely didnt live long after. Prolly due to his old age the shock itself might have caused arrest...
