Re: Old Man Dead From a Gastrointestinal Bleed

I've had several similar GI bleeds. With the first one I wasn't even sure what was happening. I had quickly started feeling ill in the middle of the night & was camped out on the toilet shitting & feeling miserable. I suddenly had large amounts of black, tarry liquid shit coming out of my ass & simultaneously had explosive projectile vomiting of blood & quickly passed out & fell onto the floor. I somehow made it back to my bed after waking up & called my brother to let him know what was going on. Trying to be a tough guy, I decided to see if I could ride it out. I called my brother-in-law & had him drop some Gatorade off. I'm not sure how long I lasted but it was at least into the evening & possibly into the next day when I realized it wasn't going away & my condition was getting increasingly worse over time with continued blood loss. I refused my brother's idea of calling an ambulance & when he made it over to take me to the hospital he said that I looked like a corpse from blood loss. I had to stay in the hospital for at least a couple of days.
This happened to me probably about 6 times with a similar pattern of my hardheaded ass trying to ride it out & finally having to give in & get someone to take me to the hospital. One time I had tried to get a shower before going & my brother had to drag me out of the tub because I had to lie down & couldn't get up. I'm definitely lucky to be alive & it "only" took me 6 times to finally learn my lesson.
Ok two things

First, what issue are you experiencing that caused six(!) GI bleeds and hasn't killed you?

Second, if it happens again, call an ambulance. I can attest -- We do get very annoyed at people who abuse the system and call us for total non-emergencies. Being unable to get up off the bathroom floor is an emergency, and we're better suited to help you out than your brother.

I was taking NSAIDs prior to getting hip replacements so I wouldn't have to take opiates. Needless to say, I no longer take NSAIDs & this hasn't happened in almost 3 years.

There are basically 2 reasons I wouldn't take an ambulance: 1) I can practically throw a rock from my house & hit the hospital so it was faster to just get in a car & go than to wait for an ambulance & 2) I didn't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a ride going only a short distance. I definitely knew they were emergencies & that's why I went to the ER.

I was also dealing with some pretty heavy depression during at least part of those incidents so staying alive didn't seem to be such a huge priority at the time (that's not currently the case). I've also experienced a number of no shit near death experiences (whitewater rafting, skydiving, dirt biking, surfing, war zones etc.) & after a few of those the fear of death kinda loses a bit of its edge & doesn't seem like that big of a deal -- especially when combined with the depression.

Re: Old Man Dead From a Gastrointestinal Bleed

I appreciate how negatively it is looked at for professionals(EMT/firefighters) to attend a death scene and free willy nilly snap photos of the deceased for their own pleasure.
