The Murder of Rasputin, 1916, and His Supposed Preserved Penis
In the early hours of December 30, 1916, or December 17 under the old Russian calendar, Grigori Rasputin was killed at Prince Felix Yusupov's Moika Palace in Petrograd. His body was thrown from the Bolshoy Petrovsky Bridge into the Malaya Nevka river and recovered beneath the ice two days later. The account of poisoning, shooting and drowning originated in Yusupov's memoirs, but the autopsy found neither poison nor water in the airways. It recorded three bullet wounds, one a contact shot to the forehead, though who fired it has never been established. His genitals were recorded as intact, contrary to the castration legend. An alleged relic sold in 1994 was identified as a dried sea cucumber, while the specimen exhibited at a St Petersburg erotica museum since 2004 has never been authenticated. Because his body was exhumed and cremated in March 1917, no comparison can be made. |
