Moors Murders Photos: Brady, Hindley and Five Victims, Manchester, 1963-1965
Ian Brady and Myra Hindley abducted and killed five children and teenagers in and around Manchester between 1963 and 1965. Brady was born Ian Duncan Stewart, but he took his stepfather's surname in adolescence and was charged and convicted as Brady. The victims were Pauline Reade, 16, killed July 12, 1963; John Kilbride, 12, killed November 23, 1963; Keith Bennett, 12, killed June 16, 1964; Lesley Ann Downey, 10, killed December 26, 1964; and Edward Evans, 17, killed October 6, 1965. Reade, Kilbride and Downey were buried on Saddleworth Moor. Bennett's remains have never been found. Evans was killed inside 16 Wardle Brook Avenue in Hattersley and was not taken to the moor. David Smith witnessed Evans' killing and alerted police early October 7, 1965, breaking the case. At their 1966 trial, Brady received three concurrent life sentences. Hindley received two life sentences and an additional seven years. Both later confessed to killing Reade and Bennett, and Reade's body was recovered July 1, 1987.
