Monte Cristo Prison Riot, Boa Vista Brazil, October 2016: 25 Inmates Killed
On Sunday, October 16, 2016, 25 prisoners died at the Monte Cristo agricultural penitentiary near Boa Vista, capital of Roraima state in northern Brazil. During visiting hours, inmates from one wing forced open the locks and entered a wing occupied by a rival faction. Seven victims were decapitated and six were burned to death. Around 100 visiting relatives, mainly women, were held briefly until about 80 officers from the state police special operations battalion entered the prison and regained control by sundown. The state secretary of justice said every hostage was released. Contemporary reporting referred only to two opposing factions and did not identify them. Less than twelve weeks later, on January 6, 2017, the prison saw another mass killing, when 33 inmates died and about thirty were decapitated in retaliation for a massacre in Manaus days earlier. This account concerns the October 2016 riot, not the January incident. |

OK. It was gang related. But Brazil does provide some pretty fucked up material for DR, especially since it's a Christian country, in 'peace time'. |
