Japanese war correspondent Mika Yamamoto, 45, of the Tokyo news agency Japan Press, was killed while recording a firefight in Aleppo's Suleiman al-Halabi district, Syria, on August 20, 2012. She was with Free Syrian Army rebels when men described by her colleague Kazutaka Sato as government soldiers fired from 20 to 30 meters away. Yamamoto was struck and later died in a nearby hospital. After her body was repatriated, a Tokyo Metropolitan Police autopsy determined that she had been hit by nine bullets, including a neck wound that severed her spinal cord. She had reported from Afghanistan in 2001 and during the 2003 Iraq invasion, and became the first Japanese journalist killed in the Syrian civil war. The Syrian government denied responsibility; no shooter was identified and no investigation result was published.
