Re: Memento Mori - Loads of Pics

Which one is dead in 25? Usually it's the one not looking at the camera but I can't tell in this one.
If you question whether or not a photo is post mortem, it isn't a post mortem photo. It is a myth that the Victorians posed, propped and painted the dead to appear alive. True Victorian post mortem photos were rare, but quite obvious with the decedent lying in repose in a bed or coffin.

Look at the discoloration in their hands. I think they are both dead

Pretty interesting what went on back then.
It is creepy in a sense.
It didn't go on back then, in this manner. Only two of these are post mortem photos. True Victorian post mortem photos were rare, but quite obvious, with the decedent lying in repose in a bed or coffin.

Re: Memento Mori - Loads of Pics

I've been a fan of these pics for years and I always find them haunting yet beautiful. This is an amazing collection that had a few I've never seen before. Thank you!
Don't you wonder how they managed to make the dead look so alive? They look alive because they are. Only two of these photos are post mortem.

Re: Memento Mori - Loads of Pics

I've always been fascinated by the mother holding the baby with the white dress. It's the sixth picture from the bottom up. The mother's the one who's dead. So sad!
That isn't a post mortem photo. You can't sit a corpse upright like that, and certainly can't put a baby on the lap of a corpse.

Some of these look over-ripe.
Only two are post mortem, so definitely not over-ripe.

They didn't paint eyes. That is a myth of many. Only 2 of these photos are post mortem.

Re: Memento Mori - Loads of Pics

A trick for finding out who's dead and who's alive: The dead person seems to usually be the clearest in the picture. Probably due to not moving much.
Totally false. It's super easy to figure out who is deceased, because they would be lying in repose in a bed or coffin.
