Just look at their surroundings. Nobody lives in the slums because they want to. These people are trapped by poverty, without access to higher education, little to no work opportunity and virtually 0% chance at prosperity through legal means. With prospects that bleak, I can see why these kids would be tempted by a cartel's promise of fortune and luxury. But instead they get in over their heads, & defecting from any cartel = a death sentence
