A widely repeated story says that Masha, a student partying with friends in the Odessa catacombs on New Year's Eve 2005, became separated from the group. According to the account, she remained missing underground for days, died from dehydration, and was recovered around two years afterward. The claim originated in a 2009 post by Ukrainian explorer Eugene Lata. No public documentation of the disappearance has surfaced, and researchers who investigated the story regard it as unverified and possibly an urban legend. The Odessa catacombs do exist beneath the city as an unmapped maze extending roughly 2,500 km, commonly described as a 2500 km network.

On January 1st 2005, some Odessa teens decided to spend New Years night partying in the catacombs. However, in the drunken revelry a member of the group, a girl named Masha, became separated and lost in the catacombs. She spent three days wandering in the freezing cold and pitch black before she died of dehydration. It took two years before the police were able to locate her body and retrieve it from the catacombs.
