Marisol Mora Cuevas, Tlacojalpan Mayor Kidnapped and Killed, Veracruz 2012
On the evening of June 24, 2012, one week before Mexico's general election, armed hooded men took Marisol Mora Cuevas, 42, from her home in Tlacojalpan, Veracruz, Mexico, in front of her children. She was the town's mayor and a former federal deputy. Four days later, her bound and burned body was discovered on a rural road near Loma Bonita, across the state border in Oaxaca; the Oaxaca prosecutor's office said she had been strangled. In October 2012, authorities announced the arrest of men they described as Los Zetas members, and said two had confessed to killing her after the family declined to continue making extortion payments. Those same men were linked to the killing of a former mayor from a neighboring town. |
