Negotiators managed to secure the release of 20 prison guards who had been held hostage by prisoners since the uprising broke out at the Presidente Venceslau prison in Sao Paulo state on Tuesday morning. "It is all under control, the rebellion is over," a prisons service spokesman said. "The last hostages have been freed." The spokesman did not disclose terms of the negotiations. Police moved into the compound shortly afterward. The uprising erupted when a gang attacked a rival group. Prisoners killed and decapitated five inmates on Tuesday, then displayed the heads on the prison wall and brandished them on poles. Members of the First Capital Command, a drug-trafficking network in Sao Paulo, also took prison guards hostage and threatened to kill them too. Prisoners at the Pavoncito prison, in the town of Fraijanes, 70 kilometres south of the capital, mutilated and decapitated five rivals, putting a head on a stick in a gruesome sight that could be seen from outside the prison. Two other inmates were killed in the fight. The rioting began when prisoners were transferred to Pavoncito on Friday from another prison. "This is a dispute between prisoners belonging to different gangs, who bring their conflicts with them when they are locked up," prison spokesman Rudy Esquivel said. Police and prison authorities regained control of the jail on Saturday afternoon. Pavoncito houses more than 900 prisoners convicted mostly of drug trafficking, murder and robbery. Uprisings in overcrowded Central American prisons are frequent. In May, inmates at the Chimaltenango prison in Guatemala decapitated a senior prison official during a riot that began after two women were caught smuggling drugs into the jail. Guatemala is one of the most violent countries in Latin America and thousands of people are killed annually. I've seen this before. He killed his wife after she found out about him 'playing' with their son. He was out in the yard when two or three other inmates attacked him with a blade made from a toothbrush. If I remember rightly they stabbed him in the back, hit his head on the wall, stabbed him about 170 times in the chest and then cut his head and placed his dick in his mouth Must have had a long time for the guards not to realise. |
