Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni were hanged in public in Edalat (Justice) Square in Mashhad, Iran on July 19, 2005, and the Iranian Students News Agency published photos of the execution the same day. Iranian authorities said the two had been convicted of raping a 13 year old boy; gay rights campaigners including OutRage! said the charge was a cover and that the two were executed over a consensual relationship, while Human Rights Watch's Farsi speakers read the court term as a coercion charge and cautioned against calling it a gay case. Their ages are also disputed: rights groups reported them as around 17 at execution and likely minors at the time of the alleged offence, and official figures shifted repeatedly. Each was also given 228 lashes for theft, drinking and disturbing public order. What is not disputed is that Iran publicly executed juvenile offenders, which drew international condemnation.
