He could have been a new guy and didn't time himself right. Or he could have done it intentionaly. Odd thing is, I don't see a trip switch/button in his near visinity like there's supposed to be. The modern ones have lazer beams that stops the machine if it detects something in it's way.
Maybe he was testing those LASER beams.

I used to work on a press like that.
1200 tonne pressure.
Light sensors so it can't run with people reaching inside it.
First sign of a fault it shoots up and clamps at the highest point of the press to stop anyone getting crushed.
