At about ten to three on the morning of Wednesday, October 3, 2018, 37-year-old call centre agent Loraine Temple was killed on Pope John Paul II Avenue in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City, in the Philippines. Her shift had finished at two and she was walking home when two men on a motorcycle seized her bag. She resisted and struggled with them, after which one shot her in the chest and the pair fled on the motorcycle. Originally from Zamboanga City, she had been living in Lapu-Lapu City and had reportedly previously resisted another robbery.

Police obtained poor-quality CCTV footage, and because both suspects had full-face helmets, investigators used a witness who had seen their faces to produce a composite sketch. Police named a man arrested in November 2018 in connection with a separate robbery-killing as a suspect in her death, though no charge in her case has been reported. Her death prompted Cebu City to extend free shuttle services for night-shift call centre employees. Hazel Namit was Temple's colleague, not the victim.

According to the victim's fellow call center agent Hazel Namit, the victim used to drive a car, but she stopped after encountering a minor vehicular accident about a month ago.

She was on her way home after her 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift in one of the business process outsourcing (BPO) companies in the area.

Namit said they often warned the victim of walking alone, but the latter assured her and their workmates that she knew how to defend herself. She was reportedly a Muay Thai artist.

She is a native of Zamboanga City. Her mother is in the United States.

She lived with an aunt in Lapu-Lapu City.

The victim was reportedly robbed in the past, but she fought the culprit.

Mabolo Police Station Chief Dindo Alaras said they obtained a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage that captures the culprits, but the video is not clear.

The culprits both wore full-faced helmets.

Alaras said they will check other CCTV cameras from neighboring establishments.

He said the suspects may be the ones responsible in robbing a Taiwanese couple in Mabolo last week.

Police arrested eight persons at a police checkpoint including an armed person from Mabolo, suspected to be a robber who might have been responsible for the killing of a call center agent.

Chief Inspector Aldrin Villacampa, Chief of Centro Police Station said, a certain Jayme Tajanlangit, 35, residing in Mabolo, Cebu City was caught at the checkpoint at the Mandaue reclamation area, in possession of two small sachets of suspected shabu and a .45 caliber pistol with four live bullets.

Villacampa is coordinating with the Mabolo Police Station to check the background of Tajanlangit and the result of the ballistic test of the suspect’s firearm to see if this would match the cartridge or slug from the gun that killed L. T. during a robbery last October 3 at the Pope John Paul II avenue in Mabolo, Cebu City.

Villacampa added that the suspect, who was on board a motorcycle, was already in police custody after he allegedly threw something plastic but the police noticed that he was uneasy and seemed to be hiding something in his armpit. When the suspect was frisked, authorities allegedly found a .45 caliber pistol inside a shoulder-worn holster.

“Kuyaw sab to kon wala mabantayi kay posibli nga makapamusil pa to,” said Villacampa.

Seven other persons on board motorcycles and taxi cabs, who were allegedly in possession of suspected drugs and paraphernalia were also arrested.

Centro Police Station is the top police station with the highest number of arrests arising from police checkpoints for possession of illegal drugs, paraphernalia or carrying of unlicensed firearms.

The police station’s backyard now had around two hundred motorcycles used by the arrested persons and withheld as evidence.
