The livestock carrier mv Haidar with 5000 cows capsized at the pier Vila do Conde in Barcarena, Brazil. Thousands of cattle drowned, while a few hundred succeeded to escape from the water trap and sailed to the shore. The cargo ship capsized to portside and touched the bottom a few minutes after arrival at the port, due to movement of the livestock on board and increasing the list. The crew on board succeeded to abandon the cargo ship before capsizing and all are without injuries. The local authorities started investigation of the accident and started salvage operation for the vessel. The root cause of the accident is on way, as well as monitoring of the water in vicinity for oil leak from the carrier.
The livestock carrier mv Haidar is operating under the flag of Lebanon by the company Tamara Shipping. The vessel has overall length of 120.00 m, moulded beam of 16.00 m and maximum draft of 6.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 6,419 DWT. The cargo on board was owned by the beef producer Minerva SA.
