Indonesian police kill 6 terrorists in New Year's eve ambush

JAKARTA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The anti-terror squad of Indonesian police Detachment 88, popularly known as Densus 88, killed a total of six terrorists hiding in somewhere in southern side of the capital city in an ambush throughout the night of New Year's eve.

The ambush on the terrorists' den in Kampung Sawah, Ciputat, located in administration area of South Tangerang city, took place on Tuesday night following the arrest of a man identified as a terrorist in an internet caf located in Banyumas, Central Java earlier in the day.

An Indonesian Police headquarters spokesperson Boy Rafly Amar said Thursday that the arrested man, Anton alias Septi, was a suspected member of the terrorist group involved in series of shootings against the police in the capital city mid last year.

After obtaining information from Anton, members of Densus 88 conducted a raid against a rented-house used as the hideout of Anton's accomplices at 8:00 p.m. local time.

"One of the gang members refused to surrender and tried to flee from the scene by motorbike. He even retaliated with dagger and firearm. Shootout took place right then, leaving the terrorist killed," Boy said.

He said that fire exchange between police and terrorist accomplices lasted almost 10 hours with a several hours of pause beginning from 3:00 a.m. local time. "At 5:00 a.m. (local time) police entered the house and found five bodies injured inside," Boy said, adding that a member of Densus 88 suffered minor injuries during the raid.

Boy added bodies of those killed in the location were brought to police hospital for further identification. Boy said that police arrested a total of nine terrorists in relation with the latest ambush.

Bomb materials, assembled bombs, pistols and banknotes worth hundreds of million rupiah were found inside the house, according to Boy.

According to the arrested terrorists, the group was the perpetrator of bombing in a Chinese monastery located in West Jakarta in August last year.

Boy said those terrorists were member of terror group led by Abu Roban who died in a police raid in Batang, Central Java in May last year.

The group also committed several bank and shop robberies in Java and Sumatra. The money they obtained from the robberies was used to finance their terror operations, Boy added.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Police Chief General Sutarman said the recently-foiled group actually planned to undertake attacks during Christmas last month, but somehow they aborted their plans.

"Long before (their plans) we already kept them under surveillance," Sutarman said as quoted by a local media.

Indonesia saw numerous small-scaled terror attacks after Densus 88 paralyzed a terrorist group led by two notorious Malaysian militants Azahari and Nurdin M Top.

Indonesia managed to arrest terrorists of Bali blast, sentenced them to long term imprisonment and executed part of them to death after trial in civilian courts.
