Karsaz Bombing of Benazir Bhutto's Motorcade, Karachi, October 2007
The Karsaz bombing occurred in Karachi, Pakistan, on the night of October 18, 2007, only hours after former prime minister Benazir Bhutto returned from eight years of exile. As her truck moved along Shahrah-e-Faisal among hundreds of thousands of people, two explosives detonated beside it, with the second being a large suicide device. Bhutto lived because she had just gone down into the vehicle's armoured compartment. No definitive fatality count was established. The Sindh government recorded 149 deaths, while her party reported 177 people killed and more than 600 injured. Later accounts commonly place the number killed at about 180, including some 20 policemen. No group claimed responsibility. Investigators blamed Baitullah Mehsud, but Bhutto publicly suspected figures in the establishment. Two months afterward, on December 27, 2007, she was assassinated in Rawalpindi.
