Karsaz Bombing of Benazir Bhutto's Motorcade, Karachi, October 2007
These photos are from the Karsaz bombing in Karachi, Pakistan on the night of October 18, 2007. Two bombs, the second a large suicide device, went off beside the truck carrying former prime minister Benazir Bhutto through a crowd of hundreds of thousands on Shahrah-e-Faisal, hours after she returned from eight years of exile. Bhutto survived; she had just stepped down into the truck's armoured compartment. The death toll was never fully settled: the Sindh government put it at 149, her party counted 177 with more than 600 injured, and later coverage commonly says about 180 killed, among them some 20 policemen. No group claimed the attack; investigators blamed Baitullah Mehsud, while Bhutto publicly suspected figures in the establishment. She was assassinated two months later, on December 27, 2007 in Rawalpindi. The video attached in a later reply is from that assassination, not from this bombing.
