Cutting of the hand of a thief is a traditional punishment in that culture. But I don't know what the rationale is for the feet.

They don't really give a stuff do they. Otherwise they would allow extra skin, cauterize the wound and suture it up properly. Or how about not even chopping it off in the first place?

Many countries use these methods and other methods for punishing criminals (well some criminals, other "crimes" wouldn't be punished as severely or even at all in the US). For example: A thief could have his hand cut off. A thief who committed a major crime (in the eyes of their court) could have both a hand and a leg or a foot cut off. A person who is convicted of adultery could be stoned to death. In some cases the individual who committed the crime (allegedly or not, you know how those fucked up countries are. Not saying that people here in the US are not executed who are innocent, but more so over there by a great margin). These people can literally be punished 'An eye for an eye'. In the case of Puthan Veettil Abd ul-Latif Noushad, he had wounded a man's eye in an altercation. The court supposedly imposed a punishment of having his eye gouged out. It is unknown is the punishment was ever followed through, but my guess would be that it had been. Especially with as brutal as the courts, the radicals and a vast majority of some Islamic people are.  |
