Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Luigi Villoresi crashed his Ferrari 125 at the non-Championship race at Geneva, Switzerland in 1950. Luigi won many pre-F1 World Championship races and rallies as well as being a hugely successful sportcar driver, winning the Targa Florio in 1939 and '40. Although he did not win a Championship F1 race he did finish on the podium eight times. |

October 2nd 1948 and the first Grand Prix held at Silverstone in the UK. This is Geoffrey Ansell flipping the number 22 ERA B-Type on lap 23. As belts were not installed at the time he was thrown from the car and escaped without major injury. Looks like it going to be painful... |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
A couple of crashes for the German driver Paul Pietsch. The first is during the 1951 German GP at the Nurburgring when Paul was invited for a one-off drive with the works Alfa Romeo team. He was running in 5th place at the time. The second is a huge crash during a German Sportcar race at the very fast Avus track in 1952 which Paul was very lucky to walk away from. Pietsch drove a few races for the Auto Union team pre-war and then drove a private Maserati which he led in during the 1939 German GP before have mechanical problems and finishing third. He took part in three Championship F1 races and won the German Sportcar Championship in 1950. But after the Avus crash decided to retire while he was still in one piece. |

Here is a nice compilation of the 1973 Indy 500 set to some music that I enjoy and feel fits the mood of the tragedy

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
James Anthony 'Jimmy' Murphy won the AAA Championship in 1922 and '24 as well as the Indy 500 in 1922, he had finished 3rd in both 1923 and '24 and taken pole in '22 and '24. He became the only American to have ever won a Grand Prix race in a truly all-American car, by winning the French Grand Prix at Le Mans in a Duesenberg in 1921. He also finished 3rd in the Italian GP in 1923. The grainy photo shows the aftermath of Jimmy's terrible crash at the Syracuse, New York fairgrounds dirt track on September 15, 1924 when he slid sideways near the end of the race and crashed into a wooded railing at more than 100 mph. A large wooden piece of the splintered rail sliced through the car's radiator, engine block and through the dashboard. A second speared completely through Murphy's chest killing him before medical attention arrived. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
This seems to be the only photo of Lee Oldfield's crash at Syracuse Fairgrounds that killed 11 spectators on September 17th 1911. Lee's 'Knox Racer' blew a tyre coming off of turn two and crashed through the spectators fence. Oldfield was thrown from the car suffering a broken rib and other injuries. He later said, "I don't know how it happened. I heard my tire blow up, then I went through the fence. After that everything was a blank. When I came to I was being lifted from the top of another man on whom I had landed." |

Jean LaFosse: 1981 Le Mans Fatal If you look close at the end of the clip you can see the body of LaFosse being drug down the track with his foot caught in the car while the rest of his body is exposed Brutal is the word that pops into my mind I added a slo-mo version of the clip at the end |
