Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
A few more Sprint car crashes... 1. Sacramento 1960 and Eddie Sachs crashed into Lloyd Ruby's stationary car and flipped over sustaining injuries that would keep him in hospital for a month before taking pole at the Indy 500. He would take pole and finish second the following year and although he never managed to win the race he led 1069 laps over eight races. Tragically Eddie died in the Indy 500 inferno of '64. 2. Two time URC Sprint Car Champion Garry Gollub's explosive crash in 1983 at Big Diamond, PA. 3. Rebel 400 at Darlington in 1960 and Johnny Allen went off at the fourth turn nearly taking down the scoring tower. 4. Rex Mays fatal crash in 1949. There are a few pictures I have already posted but I missed this one.. |

Walt Hansgen's huge practice crash at Le Mans on 7th April 1966 in the monsterous 7-litre Holman & Moody Ford GT40 Mk2 sportscar. Walt lost it on a wet track crashing with a frighterning impact into the barrier as he tried to steer the car down an escape road. Walt raced pretty much everything during his career, finishing 5th at the US Grand Prix in 1964 in a Lotus. He won four SCCA Championships, raced in the Indy 500, finished on the podium in NASCAR and had much success in Sportcar racing. |

Truly horrific fatal crash for Bob McLean at the 1966 Sebring 12 hours when his Ford GT40 left the road and sheared an electicity pole in two and barrel rolled off the course, bursting into flame and ending up, upside down with Bob trapped inside. McLean was very successful in domestic Canadian Sportscar racing. Two of these amazing photos were taken by Bill Stowe. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
This is from the the same race as Bob McLean's fatal crash, the Sebring 12 Hours 1966 and Don Wester's wrecked Porsche 906. This is what happened in Bob's words, "I had caught up with and passed Mario Andretti’s Ferrari at the hairpin turn. Accelerating away from that turn and heading up the straight-away toward the Webster turn, Mario passed me and pulled away some from my car. Then all of a sudden his Ferrari was spinning and sliding off the straight-away to the left. I lifted from the accelerator to slow and make a quick decision on what my options were. It appeared to me that I could make it past Mario’s car without an incident. I floored the accelerator to pass by. He seemed to be completely off the track to the left. Then it happened. I felt a hard bump from the Ferrari in the left rear quarter panel of my Porsche. From then on, I was spinning around off the track to the left, holding the steering wheel with the brakes locked. I was in a cloud of dust and did not know where or when I was going to stop. Then I hit something very hard, and the whole cockpit of the Porsche 906 wrapped itself around me. I could feel it all happening, then I passed out." The car went off of the track hitting a group of spectators killing four. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Peter Gregg flips his Porsche at Sebring 12 hours 1980, this time thankfully he walks away. This was a rare arror for Gregg, two times Trans-Am Champion, six times winner of the IMSA GTO Championship, four times winner of the Daytona 24 hours . On 15th December 1980 Peter was found dead lying by a sand dune near a highway in Jacksonville with a gunshot wound to the head and a suicide note in his briefcase. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Francis Affleck on February 7th 1985. He was a French-Canadian driver practicing for an ARCA race when he got sideways in turn two and rolled several times. Due to the failure of his window protection Francis was partially thrown out of his car and sustained head and neck injuries that would prove fatal. Due to this accident the window protection was redesigned.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
A horrible crash for Don McTavish at the Permatex 300 in 1969. After a collision Don's car hit the barrier where it joins with the wall and when the barrier gave way the wall took the front and side off of the vehicle totally exposing the driver who was then hit by Sam Sommers and McTavish's legs were severed. AlvinKarpis covered this in an earlier posting but with some different photos. |
