Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

I've been looking for this one for ages.

South African F1 racer John Love drove mainly in his local African series but also took part in the Championship round from the early sixties. He finished 2nd in 1967.

John crashed at Clubhouse corner at Kyalami in a local series race, when the throttle pedal stuck open and the car rammed itself between the armco barriers, stopping just short of his head.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Jacky Ickx suffered broken ankles and burns after this huge crash at Watkins Glen in the US Grand Prix 1976 after something broke.

Jacky added another three Le Mans wins to the three he had prior to this accident and won the 1985 Sportcar Championship.

Jacky was runner up in the 1968 and 1970 F1 Championships.

British driver Martin Brundle at practice for the Monaco GP 1984 in his Tyrrell 012, in his first year in F1.

He would finish 2nd at the US GP that year, he has won the Le Mans and Daytona 24 hours races and was World Sportscar World Champion in 1988.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Here is a clip from the 1981 Indy 500 of Gordon Smiley in second place and Rick Mears in third in a battle

Smiley shows off his defensive skills with a couple good blocks and an in your face cutoff at the turn

I love showing this clip to 15 year olds on Youtube claiming that Smiley was a rookie and was in over his head

Thats bullshit, how was Smiley in over his head when in 1981 he held down second place for a while and even held first place for a couple laps near the end of the race

A perfect clip of a great underrated driver

Smiley was a great driver but he had been warned by MANY veterans that he was gonna end up killing himself. He was known to try to "catch" the car from spinning. Many guys warned him many times, at Indy, just "let it spin". Had he done this, he more than likely would have just ended up in the grass with little damage. He caught the car and overcorrected head on. Tragic, and we can always say "what if". He was a great racer, but I believe at IMS he was in over his head!Great Thread btw. I found this site, checked out a few pgs of this thread, and then joined. Thanks for all u do!

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Alex Zanardi today won a Gold Medal in the Paralympics.

Pretty impressive and proof of his strength of mind to be the best he can possibly be despite his handicap.
If you have not read his book, you really need to. The man is a true fighter and an inspiration. "My Sweetest Victory" - Alex Zanardi

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Nelson Piquet's massive practice crash at Imola in 1987. This was the same place that his countryman Ayrton Senna would fatally crash in 1994, the Tamburello. The thing that saved Nelson may have been that he went in backwards...

Although Piquet missed this race with concussion, he ended up winning the '87 Championship to add to his '81 and '83 titles.
