Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Rolf Stommelen was driving the Embassy Hill GH1, the team owned and managed by the twice World Champion Graham Hill.

Rolf was leading the race when he lost his rear wing and the car flew over the barrier and into the crowd, killing four spectators and breaking Stommelen's legs.

Rolf lost his life in a huge crash in a US sportcar event in 1983.

I have large Stommelen folder with both crashes

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Here are the infamous "Porta-Potty Photos" taken while the crash was happening in 1985

Personally I think the first shot was a guy taking a picture of his buddy using the "Porta-Potty" and got the crah in the background by pure luck only, then played it off and kept taking pictures

Imagine being in the porta-potty. You would be thinking fuck that sounds close, I hope that isn't coming my way!

Alvin, thank you for posting the closeup, slo mo clip. While it was really helpful for those of us who've been having a difficult time seeing his body, at the same time it was awful to see how his body was tossed about. Even if he hadn't been killed instantly by the catch fence, I don't think there's any way he could have survived that.

This thread has made me think a lot. The human body is pretty damned resilient, but every member on here has seen how fragile it also is... and how instantly we can meet our own demise. I'm thankful that he probably only had time to say "oh, shi..." before he died and that it was almost instantaneous. At least he died doing something he loved and is well-remembered and respected, after the fact. We should all be so lucky.

Okay, that's all the sentimental shit from me, for now. Carry on. :)

I find towards the end when he sits up before he rolls back over to be very eerie! Almost like a last bow type thing. I am also glad he was killed fast.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Didier Pironi's career ending practice crash at Hockenheim in 1982.

He arrived at the track leading the championship but in a wet qualifying session he didn't see Prost's Renault in the gloom and rode over it into the barrier, destoying the front of his Ferrari and smashing his legs to pieces.

He nearly lost his legs but after a lengthy rehabilitation he raced powerboats, sadly losing his life off of the Isle of Wight in 1987.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Being a huge Gilles Villeneuve fan, it's hard to have that much sympathy for Pironi. Certainly Enzo Ferrari didn't have that much, upon being told of Pironi's crash his only comment seems to have been "Goodbye World Championship". Of course, Ferrari was notorious in his treatment of drivers - you take one out, you plug another in. After being effectively accused of killing Italians earlier in unsafe cars (maybe Musso in 1958?) but he viewed Villeneuve as a son.

Given how the success of the film-doc "Senna" (just don't ask about it's whitewash job on the subject!) has led to the Ron Howard film "Rush" - based on 1976 Lauda/Hunt battle - yes it will have Lauda's crash and recovery as a key part of the story, I've always considered that Pironi's 1982 could be a film, there is such a story there though that some would say it's all too much "Hollywood".

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

In the end mechanics and team bosses were having to sort out these issues.
What a surprise to see Ken Tyrrell himself with a wrench in his hand, repairing the barriers. I'd heard that the race was a mess, but I had no idea! Ken was a great team boss and an overall good guy - we miss gentlemen like him in the sport these days. He gave many greats their start in the game.
