Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
German driver Manfred Winkelhock at the Flugplatz section of the Nurburgring in his F2 March in 1980. This flip took place on lap 4 after contact with Italian driver Andrea de Cesaris which damaged the nose section of the March which lost downforce over the crest and took off, completely destroying itself. Manfred walked away with no injuries... Winkelhock would later take part in 47 Grand Prix before losing his life in a Sportscar race in 1985. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
These are a cracking set of photo's from the European F3 Championship in 1980 at the Mugello track in Italy. The whole mess starts with contact between Salmi and Cappellotto. Salmi continues but Cappelotto gets hit by cars behind. Pictures 1 - 11 show the pack ploughing into each other. Pictures 1 - 3 below are the leading cars that have completed the lap and although warning flags are present they don't know that the track is blocked and just add to the mayhem.... |

I have no idea why I did not post that before Smiley, Sneva, hell anything in this thread The three drivers speeding by not even glancing over to see if Braid is dead or severely maimed makes this photo by far and I mean by far my favorite of all times |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
This next one looks uncannily similar the the Gerry Birrell fatal accident on page 39....same track, Rouen in France and yet again the barrier didn't stand up to the impact and at the same corner and believed to also be a puncture... This is two years prior to Birrells fatal accident and it involved the French F3 driver, Denis Dayan. Again the car past through the barrier that split open. Dayan was terribly injured and died two days later in hospital. |

Yet another guardrail that's not up to the job, this time it's the old Crystal Palace track in London. Alex Soler-Roig and Graham Hill come together in the F2 race and Alex crashes into the barrier which opens up but thankfully the car doesn't pass fully underneath and Graham helps to get the driver out. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Re: Denis Dayan: In that same race another French driver, Jean-Luc Salomon was killed. He clashed wheels and apparently ended up striking another car while inverted. It is still regarded as the darkest day in French junior motorsport... they had high hopes for these 2 drivers. I've never seen any pictures, but then till now I've not seen any pics of Dayan's crash either. Judging by the scuff marks on the ground, it looks like a suspension failure chucked him off. I think the guard rails at Rouen were in a personal battle with Watkins Glen (Cevert, Koinigg) to see which could be the best can openers. Unbelievable it was allowed & accepted for so long. |
